CASCARA


Synonyms  :Cascara bark, cascara sagrada, sacred bark, chittenbark, Cortex Rhamnipurshianae.

Biological Source — Cascara Sagrada is the dried bark of Rhamnuspurshianade Candolle, belonging to family Rhamnaceae. It is collected at least one year before use.

Geographical Source
It is obtained both from wild and cultivated shrubs and small trees in North Carolina Washington, Oregen regions of United States. It is also cultivated in Western Canada and Kenya.

Uses


In the series of anthracene glycoside containing drugs, cascara is mild drug. In small doses, it is  used as bitter stomachic and tonic and in larger doses as purgative .
