EUROPEAN SOULL
Synonyms
Scilla, squill bulb, white squill.
Biological Source -
Squill consists of the sliced and dried scaly
leaves from the bulbs of Urginea maritima (Lim Baker, belonging to family
Liliaceae.
Geographical Source
It is indigenous to the Countries near the
Mediterranean region like France, Italy, Malta, Spa Greece, Algeria, and
Morocco. It is also found in Italy, Spain, Greece, France
and Algeria.
Collection and Preparation
White squill gives the bulbs which are about
12 - 15 cm in diameter and 18 - 20 cm in height They grow in half submerged
condition in sandy soil in the coastal region. They are collected spring or in
August when the plant sheds all aerial leaves and flowering stage is completed.
After collection, the external thin scaly leaves and central portion are
removed and the remaining flesh bulb is cut into transverse slices and then
dried by sun rays or artificially.
Uses
It is a cardiotonic without
cumulative effect. It is also used in chronic bronchitis as an expectorant in
small doses, while in higher doses causes vomiting.
