DEXTRAN
DEXTRAN
It is a polysaccharide
produced by growing bacteria on the substrate sucrose, Containing a backbone of
D-glucose units linked predominantly α-D (1-6).
Commercially LeuconostOC mesenteroides and Leuconostoc dextranicum
organisms are used.
Various grades of dextrans
are produced depending upon the method used for preparation.
Dextrans are water soluble and insoluble in alcohol. Molecular
weight of dextrans varies from - 75000. All dextrans exclusively contain α
-D-glucopyranosyl units.
Uses
1.
Dextran is used as plasma volume expander.
