Synonyms
-Janglipyaz, Sea Onion, Scilla, Urginea.
Biological Source - Urginea consists of dried
slices of the bulbs of UrgineaindicaKunth, family Liliaceae.
Geographical Source - It is found in India.
It is grown on sea coasts including Konkan and
Saurashtra and also in the dry hills of the
lower Himalayas at an altitude of 1500 m.
Cultivation and Collection
Uses
It is cardiotonic, stimulant and also an
expectorant. It is diuretic in small doses. In large doses, itis emetic and
cathartic .It resembles digitalis in its cardiotonic activities, but is less
Cumulative and acts rapidly .It is not a perfect substitute
for digitalis, as it is associated with irritant effect and is poorly absorbed. It is
used as a powerful expectorant in chronic bronchitis and asthma. It is also to
possess anti-cancer activity against human epidermoid carcinoma of the
nasopharynx in Culture.
