HYPERICUM

Synonyms - St. John's Wort, Millepertuis, Goat weed.

Biological Source
This consists of dried aerial parts of the plant known as Hypericumperforatum Linn. Fam Hypericaceae Collected during flowering season or shortly before flowering.

Geographical Source
It is indigenous to England and found in Europe and Australia. In India it is found distributed in Western Himalaya upto an altitude of 1000-3000 metres .

Uses :

1.    Hypericum is described as an anti-depressant.
2.    It is prescribed for treatment of anxiety, moderate depression and seasonal affective disorders. It has been licensed in Germany for these treatments.
3.    Based on the reports, presently it is believed that it is either hypericin or hyperforin or both in combination show the biological activity. The reports also indicate that, Contrary to synthetic depressants, St. John's Wort shows this activity by several possible mechanisms.

4.    These mechanisms include (i) Monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibition, (ii) Inhibition of serotonin reuptake inhibition of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and (iv) inhibition of interleukin - 6 (IL-6).
